Professional Relationships 2017
Establish and maintain professional
relationships and behaviours focused
on the learning and wellbeing of each
learner.
Relationships with students
The first few weeks of term 1 I focussed on getting to know my students and building a relationship with them. As part of this I felt that it was important to share some things about myself with the students (especially because I am new to the school) before asking them to share with me (it goes both ways!).
Another way that I worked on building relationships with students this term was by getting involved in school activities such as athletics and swimming sports.
Week 3 was very much ruled by house spirit activities in preparation for athletics day! The house spirit here is amazing and the girls ave spent every lunch time practicing chants. I am in Witarina house which is orange, so I have stocked up on the orange accessories for any girls who forget or don't manage to bring anything from home. It is great to see the girls in a different situation and get to know them through the house activities and excitement throughout the week. The girls really appreciate you taking an interest and being there to support and encourage them in their sport and house activities.
My Nemo costume won me the best costume award for Witarina house for the day too!
Teacher appreciation week 2017
I was so excited to receive teacher appreciation notes from these students. These two girls had been struggling with their literacy work and needed extra support to help them to gain some confidence and improve their literacy skills. I had no idea how much they really appreciated me supporting them with this.
Relationships with whanau
In order to establish positive relationships with whanau from the start of the year, I made phone calls to each student's whanau to introduce myself and make sure that they have my contact details if they have any questions or concerns throughout the year. We also set up a class blog where whanau can go to see updates and pictures of what is happening at school.
Within the FFL programme we all work together really closely and communicate pretty much constantly about what we are teaching, how the class is working and how we can work together to tackle any issues that we have noticed within the class. For me it is awesome having this close relationship with other staff as I am learning a lot from more experienced teachers and getting support and encouragement from them. We have weekly meetings on Friday mornings and also communicate via a private facebook group (we post updates on how the class is going ever couple of days) and via email. These collegial relationships make it a lot easier for us to collaborate and ensure that the classes run as smoothly as possible.
